Sally Kern, Asshole of the Day for March 23, 2014
by TeaPartyCat (Follow @TeaPartyCat)
I suppose it’s progress that people can’t just dismiss gays wanting to have the right to marry without giving a reason any more. A generation ago that wouldn’t have been true. The sad part is how weak some of these reasons are.
So this week we saw Oklahoma Rep. Sally Kern claiming “the homosexual agenda is a bigger threat than terrorism”:

Kern told Parshall that she was outraged that people wanted to make her seem like an “idiot” for simply stating that “the homosexual agenda is a bigger threat than terrorism.”
…
“I was using what I use as a teacher, you know when you’re teaching high school students you try to find something they can relate to, to share a concept with, so they can grasp that concept better,” Kern continued. “So everybody understands terrorism destroys people’s lives, it destroys property. All I meant was, all I was saying was the homosexual agenda is destroying people’s lives. More people have died from AIDS than have died from a terrorist attack here in America. It’s destroying the moral fiber of our nation, that’s all I meant.”

"The homosexual agenda is destroying people’s lives." So she’s trying to set it up that she opposes homosexuality because she cares. She cares about people’s lives. See, she’s saying, I’m not a hateful bigot. I’m trying to save lives.
But it’s a smoke screen. First, she assumes all people who died from AIDS are gay, or that all AIDS deaths are the fault of gays. That’s just not true.
Second, if she’s so scared of AIDS, then she should support gay marriage, because monogamy is the best way to stop the spread of STDs like AIDS by limiting the number of partners. But that’s not on the table for people like her, in the same way that birth control and real sex ed classes is not considered when it comes to trying to curtail abortions.
Third, she only cares to make a comparison to terrorism. Well, almost any cause of death in this country will kill more people than terrorism. Terrorism only killed 3,487 since 1985. Why doesn’t she care about the
34,080 people killed in car crashes in 2012?
8,000 soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanisatn?
40,015 people killed by their straight spouse or partner (1985-2004)?
So her caring only about AIDS vs terrorism but not other things that killed even more people exposes her bigotry.
She is no different than the people who claim it violates their religion to have to bake a cake for someone who violates their religion, but then it turns out they don’t care if the customer committed adultery, lied, stole, took the Lord’s name in vain, or is even of another religion. Nope. The only thing that they can’t take in a customer is the person’s being gay.
So for using a bullshit comparison of fatalities to pretend she cares about life to hide her bigotry, Sally Kern is the Asshole of the Day.
It is Sally Kern's first time as Asshole of the Day.
